Their only fault being that they don’t have a home. Los Angeles is home to one of the nation’s largest populations of homeless cats with an estimated one to three million living on the streets.
Eager to find a solution to the problem, Karn Myers and her husband Mark Dodge launched FixNation--the first full-time, permanent spay/neuter facility in Los Angeles. Now, their award-winning programs serve as a model for other communities and charities dealing with similar situations on a global scale.
At the heart of our high-volume, high-quality spay/neuter clinic is an experienced and expert team that genuinely cares about cats. In addition to free spay/neuter surgery, every homeless cat brought to FixNation receives vaccinations, fluids, antibiotics, pain medication and flea treatment.
Our mission is to humanely reduce the population of homeless cats in Los Angeles by sterilizing as many as possible and allowing their numbers to naturally decline over time.

I’m the queen of the Home Depot in Woodland Hills, where I serve as the store’s resident mouser. I came to FixNation for spay surgery and was returned the next day to my home turf, where I’m back to patrolling the aisles of the garden center and making customers smile. I’ve been told I’m an excellent example of a healthy and thriving working cat.
Nice to meet you! I’m your well-known resident of Hollywood Forever. You can find me sunning on gravestones. The owners of my iconic cemetery came to FixNation years ago and asked them to spay and neuter all the community cats living on the grounds. Pretty cool right? FixNation still provides these services.
I’m one of the cats at Jay Leno’s famous garage in the San Fernando Valley which is just a stone’s throw from our clinic. FixNation has sterilized a number of the Disneyland Cats living within the famous theme park and resort. We’ve all been TNR’d and are now looked after by their own team of caregivers.

Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) is is the most humane and effective way to manage community cat populations. Volunteers capture homeless cats and kittens in special traps, take them to a vet or spay/neuter clinic for surgery, then return them the next day to where they were found. During their procedure, cats also have one ear ‘tipped’. This easy-to-see marker tells other trappers that a cat is already “fixed”. Community cats that are sterilized are often healthier and live longer than other free-roaming kitties!
Feed the cat in the afternoon or evening.
Get kitty on a regular feeding schedule, putting out dry food and water each afternoon or evening. This makes trapping a lot easier later! You can even make a DIY feeding station.
Get a loaner trap from FixNation and book an appointment.
Watch our online training video with easy step-by-step instructions, then borrow a special humane trap and cloth cover from our clinic. Make an appointment online. You’re all set!
Set trap, wait, trap cat and rejoice!
Trap between 4 pm to 11.30 pm the evening before your appointment. Set food on some tin foil and place under the trap (not inside). Keep an eye on the trap – never leave it unattended – and wait for kitty to go inside. Be patient! Trap-Neuter-Return is the first step towards a happier and healthier life for your community cat friend.
Hold the cat overnight until surgery the next day.
Congrats, you got the cat! Cover the trap and keep it in a warm, quiet place overnight (like a bathroom or a heated garage). Check the cat once an hour, every hour, until bedtime. Here are some more pre-op tips!
Take the cat to get fixed (for free!).
Feed kittens a teapoon of wet food at 6 am on surgery day; no food or water for older cats. Cover the car seats with plastic and securely place the traps on top. Arrive at FixNation between 7-8.30 am, leave kitty in car and wait in line to check-in. (Here’s a sneak peek of the check-in process!) FixNation will spay/neuter the cat and provide vaccines, flea treatment, fluids, pain medication and an ear tip. Pick-up from 3 - 4.30 pm.
Keep the cat one more night for recovery.
Take kitty home in the covered trap and keep in a warm, quiet place overnight once again. Feed a ¼ can of wet food about six hours post-op (check paperwork for exact time). Check kitty once an hour, every hour, until bedtime. Here are some more post-op tips!
Return the cat to where it was trapped.
This is the big moment…release the cat where you trapped it the morning after surgery. Freedom!!!! Here’s a video about community cats that shows a kitty getting released. Clean the trap and trap cover and return to FixNation during opening hours.
Special events are an key source of revenue for FixNation, such as our popular Architects for Animals showcase, featuring shelters for community cats designed by local architects.
The majority of our funding comes from foundation grants and private individuals, and donations of any amount are welcomed with heartfelt gratitude.
From photography to prepping medical supplies to staffing special events, there are all kinds of ways you can help us help homeless cats. Fill out a volunteer application form today!
A city-wide network of independent trappers make our Trap-Neuter-Return mission possible, bringing us cats to spay and neuter four days a week, Wednesdays through Saturdays.
Although FixNation is not a shelter or a rescue, we partner with many organizations that are always in need of loving foster families for adoptable cats.
Take action by becoming a community cat caregiver, providing daily food, water and shelter for kitties with no one else to look after them.
If you love community cats and believe in our compassionate mission, consider joining our small but dedicated team! Check out our latest career opportunities.
Help us spread the word about the many benefits of spaying and neutering, as well as our compassionate Trap-Neuter-Return mission.
Our supporters frequently host their own fundraisers to benefit the homeless cats in our care, including bake sales, Facebook fundraisers, 5Ks and walk-a-thons, etc. Every bit helps!
